I’ve never had a Mudslide, but I thought I’d like to try one when Carl and I decided to deviate from our usual dessert cocktail. White Russians are great, but this time I wanted something chocolatey.
I’d been under the impression that there was chocolate in a mudslide. Because the pre-mixed bottle my mom used to drink looked like chocolate milk, and there was a chocolate swirl on the picture in the glass.
When I looked up the recipe, I was a little more than disappointed that there wasn’t a chocolate component in the cocktail itself. So I decided to make my own version and replace the Irish cream with chocolate liqueur.
We have several chocolate options to play with, so I tried them all. Initially, I wanted to use Trader Vics but eventually decided to use Godiva. Since the Godiva chocolate liqueur already has a creamy texture, I wouldn’t need to add heavy whipping cream to the drink.
I could have used any of the three coffee liqueurs we currently have to get the flavor I needed, but I chose to use Mr. Black because it’s less sugary. Kahlua is still a good option, but the cocktail is sweeter when using it.
Then came the vodka. The ingredient that’s only there to punch up the ABV of the cocktail it is in and make it a proper adult beverage.
I added Pearl’s Vanilla Bean vodka to this cocktail because it makes all of the other flavors play nicely together while minimizing the vodka’s ethanol flavor.
Then, just for kicks, I added a little Trader Vics Macadamia Nut liqueur for depth and an added dimension to the cocktail.
I was pretty proud of my mudslide variation but agreed that it needed something when Carl suggested adding an egg white.
Then we looked at each other. Our eyes met, and we knew, at that moment, why we work as a couple.
Because we both were thinking the same thing, make it a flip.
So I did.
