I wish I could remember when I had my first Last Word cocktail. My guess was that when we started Alchemix Bar and tried a lot of different cocktails, we hadn’t had any in Iowa.
I know it turned into one of my favorite cocktails because of all the flavor notes and using ingredients that aren’t known where I live. For example, you don’t see a lot of Green Chartreuse or Maraschino liqueur here in Eastern Iowa.
I am a sucker for using things and liking things that aren’t popular in my area.
All I can tell you about my first time drinking the Last Word is that I knew why it was a classic cocktail. It’s complex, refreshing, and perfectly balanced at the same time. In addition, it offers something different to your palate that some cocktails don’t provide.
Who Created The Last Word Cocktail?
Frank Fogarty is the one that is most likely to have created The Last Word. While he worked at the Detroit Athletic Club around 1915.
This pre-Prohibition era cocktail was almost lost until 1951; Ted Saucier published a cocktail book called Bottom’s Up.
This classic cocktail was almost lost again until Seattle bartender Murray Stenson found the recipe for the Last Word in Saucier’s book while working at Zig Zag CafĂ©.
Once this drink was catapulted back into the cocktail scene in the 2000s, it started a massive trend of riffs.
Some of the most famous riffs of the Last Word are; The Final Word, Paper Plane, Last of the Oaxacans, and Cartel. Some of these are even Modern Classic Cocktails.
There are many more ones that are being created all the time.
I hope you try this drink and then explore all the others based on this one classic recipe over 100 years old!
