I love a great Old Fashioned and I love seeing riffs because it is such a great blueprint. The Redenbacher Old Fashioned is one of my favorite riffs of the classic cocktail.

This cocktail combines two favorites of mine; rum and popcorn.

When Was the Redenbacher Old Fashioned Created?

Glendon Hartley created the Redenbacher Old Fashioned in 2014 while doing a event for Bacardi Rum. He thought the caramel flavor of Bacardi Reserva Ocho would pair well with buttered popcorn.

He had been fat-washing spirits for awhile and applied the same technique to buttered popcorn and rum.

After several attempts at rum and popcorn combinations he landed on Orville Redenbacher Buttered popcorn.

When Did the Redenbacher Old Fashioned Take Off?

In 2015 Glendon was consulting for a Provisions 14 (P14) in Washington D.C. He decided to put the drink on the menu and it was really received.

The cocktail was also featured in Black Mixcellence, a Comprehensive Guide to Black Mixology.

That book is how we found out about this wonderful cocktail.
